In Fiction
In Luo Guanzhong's historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Ji Ling was described as a valiant general deeply trusted by Yuan Shu. His combat skill rivaled Guan Yu, as both of them reached a draw in a duel. Ji Ling's weapon, a war trident, was said to have weighed 50 jin. After Lü Bu called for a ceasefire between Liu Bei and Ji Ling, the dissatisfied Yuan Shu later declared himself emperor and led an attack against Lü Bu. This created animosity despite the retreat of Yuan Shu who became obsessed for gold and became so ravaged in military that he handed over all imperial titles to his brother, Yuan Shao. On the way passing through Xu Province they were intercepted by Liu Bei, and in the tenth bout Ji Ling was slain by Zhang Fei.

—F. Scott Fitzgerald (18961940)
“Given that external reality is a fiction, the writers role is almost superfluous. He does not need to invent the fiction because it is already there.”
