Jewish Student Union

The Jewish Student Union, or JSU is an organization run by the Orthodox Union's youth group, NCSY. Created in 2002 by Rabbi Steven Burg and now run via Orthodox Union employees, JSU attempts to create Jewish culture clubs in public schools across the country.

Originally created as a separate non-profit entity from NCSY in order to serve a broader spectrum of Jewish teens, the executive and lay-leadership of JSU in 2012 felt they could no longer have informal or formal connections to NCSY or any particular stream of Judaism. In July of 2012, they renamed the 501c3 organization "the Jewish Student Connection." Subsequently, clubs bearing the "JSU" or "Jewish Student Union" name are run by Orthodox Union employees.

JSU clubs are aimed at educating youth in public schools about the Jewish culture, heritage, and religion. The mission of Jewish Student Union is "to do something Jewish - that's it!" JSU currently has clubs throughout Canada and scattered throughout the United States.

Famous quotes containing the words jewish, student and/or union:

I think the Messianic concept, which is the Jewish offering to mankind, is a great victory. What does it mean? It means that history has a sense, a meaning, a direction; it goes somewhere, and necessarily in a good direction—the Messiah.
    Elie Wiesel (b. 1928)

In the student sensuality is a sluggish habit of mind.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Some are petitioning the State to dissolve the Union, to disregard the requisitions of the President. Why do they not dissolve it themselves,—the union between themselves and the State,—and refuse to pay their quota into its treasury? Do not they stand in the same relation to the State that the State does to the Union? And have not the same reasons prevented the State from resisting the Union which have prevented them from resisting the State?
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
