Early Life

Carter was born to Percy and Doris Carter in August 1928 in Melbourne, Victoria, and attended Melbourne Boys High School. By the time he matriculated in 1946, his three major passions were clear – photography, writing and travel. He began taking photographs while still at high school. His first photos were taken with a Kodak Box Brownie, given to him as a 13th birthday present.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or life:

George Eliot [Mary Ann (or Marian)

Our role is to support anything positive in black life and destroy anything negative that touches it. You have no other reason for being. I don’t understand art for art’s sake. Art is the guts of the people.
    Elma Lewis (b. 1921)
