Famous quotes containing the word charity:

The appalling thing is the degree of charity women are capable of. You see it all the time ... love lavished on absolute fools. Love’s a charity ward, you know.
    Lawrence Durrell (1912–1990)

Having levelled my palace, don’t erect a hovel and complacently admire your own charity in giving me that for a home.
    Emily Brontë (1818–1848)

Governments can err, Presidents do make mistakes, but the immortal Dante tells us that divine justice weighs the sins of the cold-blooded and the sins of the warm-hearted in different scales. Better the occasional faults of a Government that lives in a spirit of charity than the constant omission of a Government frozen in the ice of its own indifference.
    Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882–1945)
