Bell began dating American actress Evan Rachel Wood in 2005 after they co-starred in the music video for Green Day's song "Wake Me Up When September Ends". After a year together, the couple broke up in 2006. Five years later, in the summer of 2011, it was reported that Bell and Wood had rekindled their relationship. The couple married in a small ceremony on 30 October 2012.
