James D. Watson - Marriage and Family

Marriage and Family

Watson married Elizabeth Lewis in 1968. They have two sons, Rufus Robert Watson (b. 1970) and Duncan James Watson (b. 1972). Watson sometimes talks about their son Rufus, who suffers from schizophrenia. He wants to encourage progress in understanding and treatment of mental illness by determining how genetics contributes to it. Watson is an atheist. In 2003 he was one of 21 Nobel Laureates who signed the Humanist Manifesto.

Famous quotes containing the words marriage and/or family:

But most thro’ midnight streets I hear
    How the youthful Harlots curse
    Blasts the new-born Infants tear
And blights with plagues the Marriage hearse
    William Blake (1757–1827)

I worry about people who get born nowadays, because they get born into such tiny families—sometimes into no family at all. When you’re the only pea in the pod, your parents are likely to get you confused with the Hope Diamond. And that encourages you to talk too much.
    Russell Baker (b. 1925)
