James Berkeley

James Berkeley (died 1327) was a medieval Bishop of Exeter.

Berkeley was elected on 5 December 1326 and consecrated on 22 March 1327. He died on 24 June 1327. According to his successor John de Grandisson, his manors were destroyed and despoiled, and de Berkeley murdered, but it is not known how this was thought to have been done. 'The Register of John de Grandisson' as quoted in Coulton's Social Life in Britain from the Conquest to the Reformation

Famous quotes containing the words james and/or berkeley:

“We have grown literally afraid to be poor. We despise anyone who elects to be poor in order to simplify and save his inner life. If he does not join the general scramble and pant with the money-making street, we deem him spiritless and lacking in ambition.”
    —William James (1842–1910)

“I had rather be an oyster than a man, the most stupid and senseless of animals.”
    —George Berkeley (1685–1753)
