Jakob Friedrich Ehrhart

Jakob Friedrich Ehrhart (1742, Holderbank, Aargau – 1795) was a German botanist, a pupil of Carolus Linnaeus at Uppsala University, and later Director of the Botanical Garden of Hannover, where he produced several major botanical works between 1780–1793. Ehrhart was the first author to use the rank of subspecies in botanical literature, and he published many subspecific names between 1780 and 1789.

The standard author abbreviation Ehrh. is used to indicate this individual as the author when citing a botanical name.

Famous quotes containing the word friedrich:

The true courage of civilized nations is readiness for sacrifice in the service of the state, so that the individual counts as only one amongst many. The important thing here is not personal mettle but aligning oneself with the universal.
