Jacobi's Formula

In matrix calculus, Jacobi's formula expresses the derivative of the determinant of a matrix A in terms of the adjugate of A and the derivative of A. If A is a differentiable map from the real numbers to n × n matrices,

Equivalently, if dA stands for the differential of A, the formula is

It is named after the mathematician C.G.J. Jacobi.

Famous quotes containing the words jacobi and/or formula:

During the long ages of class rule, which are just beginning to cease, only one form of sovereignty has been assigned to all men—that, namely, over all women. Upon these feeble and inferior companions all men were permitted to avenge the indignities they suffered from so many men to whom they were forced to submit.

Every formula which expresses a law of nature is a hymn of praise to God.
