Jackie Trent

Jackie Trent (born Yvonne Burgess, 6 September 1940, Newcastle-under-Lyme) is an English Singer-songwriter, and actresswhose career has spanned six decades.

In 1951, in her home town, Trent won the Caroll Levis and his Discoveries talent show; she became semi-professional one week later. In 1955, age 15, she resolutely took the train to London: no agent, no contacts; entirely alone. The famous Windmill Theatre took her in - 8 performances a day. She sang in nightspots famous and infamous, creating a strong base of fans; the infamous Kray Brothers were fans and ensured her safety - and might be considered her first booking agents? In 1956, age 16, Trent entered her most intriguing period of life, entertaining the troops in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Turkey and Cyprus: in pre-package holiday locations still recovering from war. In UK, a young Tony Hatch saw her show - at Al Burnett’s Astor Club. Together, they would creat a formidable partnership, writing 100’s of songs for stars of the day – 22 songs for Petula Clark alone. Their marriage in 1967, was billed ‘Wedding of the Year;’ their signature song tune ‘Mr & Mrs,’ released the same day, was an immediate hit, world-wide. To date, Jackie Trent has written, and co-written, some 300 songs: and counting…

Famous quotes containing the word jackie:

I have nothing against the Queen of England. Even in my heart I never resented her for not being Jackie Kennedy. She is, to my mind, a very gallant lady, victimized by whoever it is who designs the tops of her uniforms.
    Leonard Cohen (b. 1934)
