Jack Butler (American Football) - Early Years

Early Years

Butler grew up near Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He attended Mt. Carmel College High School in Niagara Falls, Ontario. He didn't play football until enrolling at St. Bonaventure University where he was coached by Joe Bach, who would also coach the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1935–1936 and 1952-1953.

Butler played both offensive end and defensive end in college. His good friend and neighbor, Frank Thomas of Pittsburgh Pirates and baseball fame, also attended Mt. Carmel and St. Bonaventure University with Butler. Both gave up the seminary to play professional sports.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or years:

I taught school in the early days of my manhood and I think I know something about mothers. There is a thread of aspiration that runs strong in them. It is the fiber that has formed the most unselfish creatures who inhabit this earth. They want three things only; for their children to be fed, to be healthy, and to make the most of themselves.
    Lyndon Baines Johnson (1908–1973)

The General Strike has taught the working class more in four days than years of talking could have done.
    —A.J. (Arthur James)
