At an early age he excelled at most sports, and represented his country in rugby union and hockey at schoolboy level.
For Mauger, speedway became an obsession, his main ambition wanting to be a speedway rider; his mother purchased his first bike at the age of fourteen, and Mauger practised for hours at the Aranui Speedway. It was to be the first stage of a riding career that lasted over 30 years and spread over four decades, which continues to this day as Mauger remains deeply involved and dedicated to the sport in the capacity of speedway promoter and statesman, from his base on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia. Mauger stated that the rival he respected the most was Ivan Blacka.
