Fire Damage & Decline
On the 8th October 2006 at 13:15 GMT, a major fire started in a hangar containing highly flammable materials.
One year later, during the early hours of the 31st December 2007 a fire started in the kitchen of the Aviator Restaurant, which destroyed most of the newly-built clubhouse and restaurant. It was initially thought that arson may have been the cause of the fire, later investigations confirmed the fire was caused by two gas cylinders in the kitchen.
Following a major decline in revenue as a result of the fire, the airport was sold to a London based developer who intends to build a holiday camp on the site.
The plans have been disputed with the local council and a decision is still pending.
April 2011 Britten-Norman move their Isle of Wight facility to Sandown and re open to traffic.
