History

The council was formed on 1 April 1995, as a replacement of the old Isle of Wight County Council and Medina and South Wight Borough Councils. It is not a Unitary Authority ("UA") as it was created under the Local Government Act 1972, UAs are those authorities which were created in accordance with the Local Government Changes for England Regulations 1994 which derive their powers from the Local Government Act 1992.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

The thing that struck me forcefully was the feeling of great age about the place. Standing on that old parade ground, which is now a cricket field, I could feel the dead generations crowding me. The courage and daring of the Maroons strike like a purple beam across the history of Jamaica.
    Zora Neale Hurston (1891–1960)

It’s nice to be a part of history but people should get it right. I may not be perfect, but I’m bloody close.
    John Lydon (formerly Johnny Rotten)

No event in American history is more misunderstood than the Vietnam War. It was misreported then, and it is misremembered now.
    Richard M. Nixon (b. 1913)
