Historical Basis
This novel is based on the true story of Juana Maria, better known to history as "The Lone Woman of San Nicolas Island", a NicoleƱo Indian left alone for 18 years on San Nicolas Island, one of the Channel Islands off the California coast, before being discovered in 1853. It was believed that she lived in a cave on the island; in 2012, a Naval archeologist believes he has found that cave and investigation is ongoing.

Famous quotes containing the words historical and/or basis:
“In public buildings set aside for the care and maintenance of the goods of the middle ages, a staff of civil service art attendants praise all the dead, irrelevant scribblings and scrawlings that, at best, have only historical interest for idiots and layabouts.”
—George Grosz (18931959)
“It was the custom
For his rage against chaos
To abate on the way to church,
In regulations of his spirit.
How good life is, on the basis of propriety,
To be followed by a platter of capon!”
—Wallace Stevens (18791955)
