Isabel Roberts House - Isabel Roberts After Wright

Isabel Roberts After Wright

Isabel Roberts and her mother did not have the chance to enjoy their prairie-style home for long. They moved from River Forest to St. Cloud, Florida, a decade after the house was completed. Mary Roberts was in failing health due to the lingering effects of influenza. Isabel’s sister Charlotte and her husband were by that time established residents of St. Cloud. Mary Roberts died in Florida, in 1920.

Once in Florida, Isabel Roberts went into architectural practice with Ida Annah Ryan, who was the first women in the United States to earn a masters degree in architecture, from MIT. As the firm of Ryan and Roberts, they were among no more than a dozen architecture firms active in Orlando in the 1920s. Ryan and Roberts created landmark buildings in Central Florida, some of which still stand, today. Isabel Roberts lived and practiced in Orlando for the remainder of her life and is buried in Orlando alongside her mother and her sister.

Famous quotes containing the words isabel, roberts and/or wright:

    He is every other inch a gentleman.
    Rebecca West [Cicily Isabel Fairfield] (1892–1983)

    Politics is still the man’s game. The women are allowed to do the chores, the dirty work, and now and then—but only occasionally—one is present at some secret conference or other. But it’s not the rule. They can go out and get the vote, if they can and will; they can collect money, they can be grateful for being permitted to work. But that is all.
    —Mary Roberts Rinehart (1876–1958)

    O sinewy silver biplane, nudging the wind’s withers!
    There, from Kill Devils Hill at Kitty Hawk
    Two brothers in their twinship left the dune;
    Warping the gale, the Wright wind wrestlers veered
    Capeward, then blading the wind’s flank, banked and spun.
    Hart Crane (1899–1932)
