Iron Meteorites

Iron meteorites are meteorites that consist overwhelmingly of an iron–nickel alloy known as meteoric iron that usually consists of two mineral phases, kamacite and taenite. Iron meteorites originate from planetary cores of planetesimals.

Iron meteorites, or their meteoric iron was one of the earliest sources of usable iron available to humans, before the development of smelting which signaled the beginning of the iron age.

Famous quotes containing the word iron:

When I say artist I don’t mean in the narrow sense of the word—but the man who is building things—creating molding the earth—whether it be the plains of the west—or the iron ore of Penn. It’s all a big game of construction—some with a brush—some with a shovel—some choose a pen.
