Box Office and Reception
Iron Eagle earned US$24,159,872 at the U.S. box office. Although the movie was not a major success at the cinema, it generated US$11 million in home video sales, enough to justify a sequel.
The film has received mostly negative reviews, with a 40% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Kevin Thomas of the Los Angeles Times called the film "a total waste of time", saying it "achieves a kind of perfection of awfulness that only earnest effort can produce." Variety magazine commented that the film has "breakneck action and some dandy dogfights", but the dialogue is simply laughable.

Famous quotes containing the words box, office and/or reception:
“The idea that you can merchandise candidates for high office like breakfast cerealthat you can gather votes like box topsis, I think, the ultimate indignity to the democratic process.”
—Adlai Stevenson (19001965)
“The dissident does not operate in the realm of genuine power at all. He is not seeking power. He has no desire for office and does not gather votes. He does not attempt to charm the public, he offers nothing and promises nothing. He can offer, if anything, only his own skinand he offers it solely because he has no other way of affirming the truth he stands for. His actions simply articulate his dignity as a citizen, regardless of the cost.”
—Václav Havel (b. 1936)
“To the United States the Third World often takes the form of a black woman who has been made pregnant in a moment of passion and who shows up one day in the reception room on the forty-ninth floor threatening to make a scene. The lawyers pay the woman off; sometimes uniformed guards accompany her to the elevators.”
—Lewis H. Lapham (b. 1935)
