Iowa State University Cyclone Marching Band - Basketball Pep Bands

Basketball Pep Bands

Interested members of the ISUCF"V"MB can audition for the basketball pep bands for home basketball games at Hilton Coliseum. The pep bands include the same woodwind and brass instruments as the marching band. Percussion consists of a drum kit, and sometimes the men's band includes a bass guitar. Students receive academic credit for their participation. Auditions consist of a demonstration of major scales, a chromatic scale, and sight-reading in front of the directors. Regular rehearsals begin soon thereafter.

The band's uniform is a yellow and red hockey jersey with black pants, which marks Iowa State as rather informal in pep band circles. Music choices include all fight songs and cheers from the marching band. The sequence of "Celebration" by Kool & the Gang, "Phfft! You Were Gone", and "That's All Folks" of Looney Tunes fame are played after a Cyclones victory. Some of the most successful songs are retained for the next marching band season, as well as a vast selection of past favorites and original student arrangements. Some of the most popular and most frequently performed songs include:

  • "Ants Marching" by the Dave Matthews Band
  • "Birdland" by Weather Report
  • A medley of "Black Dog" and "Kashmir" by Led Zeppelin
  • "Come on Eileen" by Dexys Midnight Runners
  • "Take on Me by a-ha
  • "Thriller" by Michael Jackson
  • "Throwdown" by Roland Barrett

Famous quotes containing the words basketball and/or bands:

Perhaps basketball and poetry have just a few things in common, but the most important is the possibility of transcendence. The opposite is labor. In writing, every writer knows when he or she is laboring to achieve an effect. You want to get from here to there, but find yourself willing it, forcing it. The equivalent in basketball is aiming your shot, a kind of strained and usually ineffective purposefulness. What you want is to be in some kind of flow, each next moment a discovery.
    Stephen Dunn (b. 1939)

According to the historian, they escaped as by a miracle all roving bands of Indians, and reached their homes in safety, with their trophies, for which the General Court paid them fifty pounds. The family of Hannah Dustan all assembled alive once more, except the infant whose brains were dashed out against the apple tree, and there have been many who in later time have lived to say that they have eaten of the fruit of that apple tree.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
