Famous quotes containing the words stuttering, awareness and/or day:

    Had she been worth the blood, the cramped cries, the little stuttering bravado,
    The gradual dulling of those Negro eyes,
    The sudden, overwhelming little-boyness in that barn?
    Gwendolyn Brooks (b. 1917)

From the lifetime of its founder, Islam was the state, and the identity of religion and government is indelibly stamped on the memories and awareness of the faithful from their own sacred writings, history, and experience.
    Bernard Lewis, U.S. Middle Eastern specialist. Islam and the West, ch. 8, Oxford University Press (1993)

    Mary, hear,
    O Mary, marry earth, sea, air and fire;
    Our sacred earth in our day is our curse.
    Robert Lowell (1917–1977)
