International Socialists (Canada) - Recent History

Recent History

The I.S. continues to be active in many areas. Notably they played a role in helping launch the movement against the war on Iraq. It currently has several branches in Toronto as well as in Ottawa, Vancouver and members in several other cities. They have recently been involved in the fight against Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, Occupy Toronto and the reproductive justice movement, as well as the trade union and student movement. In the past few years the membership of the I.S. has fallen and it has gone from publishing Socialist Worker every two weeks to a monthly publication. Socialist Worker is however now printed in full colour. Its French-language periodical, Résistance!, and annual theoretical journal Marxism have both ceased publication. They have, however, begun publishing a monthly campus newsletter called "the Agitator." The I.S. annual Marxism conference is also smaller in size; where the main event of the conference would draw as many as 500 attendees at the group's height, now the turnout is just over 200 per year.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

I am ashamed to see what a shallow village tale our so-called History is. How many times must we say Rome, and Paris, and Constantinople! What does Rome know of rat and lizard? What are Olympiads and Consulates to these neighboring systems of being? Nay, what food or experience or succor have they for the Esquimaux seal-hunter, or the Kanaka in his canoe, for the fisherman, the stevedore, the porter?
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

Social history might be defined negatively as the history of a people with the politics left out.
    —G.M. (George Macaulay)
