International Holocaust Cartoon Competition - The Winners

The Winners

On November 1, 2006, political cartoonist Abdellah Derkaoui (Arabic: عبدالله درقاوي‎), a Moroccan, was announced as the winner and received the first prize of $12,000. Derkaoui's winning cartoon differed in context than many of the runners-up, in that it did not deny the Holocaust; instead, it used the Holocaust to make a comparison between the actions of Nazi Germany and the current actions of the Israeli government. Derkaoui's work is also featured on the web site of MSNBC cartoonist Daryl Cagle.

The second prize of $8,000 was divided between the Brazilian cartoonist Carlos Latuff and Chard, from France. One prize went to Italy, two prizes to Morocco, one prize to Jordan, one to Syria, three to Brazil, and several prizes went to Iranians.

The cartoon by Chard contains explicit Holocaust denial. It shows a panel of smoking gas chambers lying on the ground. On its side is written The myth of the gas chambers. An ultra-Orthodox Jew asks, Who has put it on the ground? and somebody answers, Faurisson, referring to a notorious French Holocaust denier.

Famous quotes containing the word winners:

The two real political parties in America are the Winners and the Losers. The people don’t acknowledge this. They claim membership in two imaginary parties, the Republicans and the Democrats, instead.
