Institute For The Management of Information Systems

The Institute for the Management of Information Systems (IMIS), previously called the Institute of Data Processing Management (IDPM), is the leading international association promoting excellence in the field of Information Systems Management through professional association and education. Its headquarters is in the United Kingdom, and it has approximately 12,000 members the majority of whom reside outside the UK. The Institute was founded in the 1960s and is a registered charity. The Institute has consistently played a prominent role in fostering greater understanding of the importance of Information Systems management, working to enhance the status of those engaged in the profession, and promoting higher standards through better education and training, both in the UK and overseas.

While there are several professional associations concentrating primarily on the technical side of information systems, the IMIS is the only one which focuses specifically on the practical application and management of information systems within society. It strives towards the recognition of Information Systems Management as one of the key professions influencing the future of the world.

Since their early establishment, the IMIS (formerly the IDPM) and the British Computer Society (BCS) have been regarded as the two main UK professional institutes for computer professionals.

Famous quotes containing the words institute, management, information and/or systems:

Whenever any form of government shall become destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, & to institute new government, laying it’s foundation on such principles & organising it’s powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety & happiness.
    Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826)

No officer should be required or permitted to take part in the management of political organizations, caucuses, conventions, or election campaigns. Their right to vote and to express their views on public questions, either orally or through the press, is not denied, provided it does not interfere with the discharge of their official duties. No assessment for political purposes on officers or subordinates should be allowed.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)

When action grows unprofitable, gather information; when information grows unprofitable, sleep.
    Ursula K. Le Guin (b. 1929)

We have done scant justice to the reasonableness of cannibalism. There are in fact so many and such excellent motives possible to it that mankind has never been able to fit all of them into one universal scheme, and has accordingly contrived various diverse and contradictory systems the better to display its virtues.
    Ruth Benedict (1887–1948)
