The Inspector General of the Royal Norwegian Navy is the Commander in chief of the Royal Norwegian Navy. The post is since August 2002 held by rear admiral Jan Eirik Finseth.
The Inspector General of the Royal Norwegian Navy is head over the Navy, Coast Guard, and Coastal Artillery. Presiding over close to 5,000 military men during peacetime and over 6,000 in wartime, the Inspector General has great responsibility to lead and defend. With the seas under his discretion, the Inspector General watches over the seas which are seven times greater in area than that of Norway's mainland.
The Inspector General not only commands the naval department, he also accepts new vessels into the department. Recently in June, the Nansen was added to the list of frigates, a first of five new frigates to be completed under the direction of Jan Eirik Finseth.
The Inspector General as of this year declared overweight naval men will not be tolerated. He is said to have informed the crew under his direction that each naval man must be able to pull another out of trouble if and when necessary and if one was overweight, it would prove to be too difficult.
