Inman Road - History

History

Inman Road was recently closed for repairs. The bridge spanning Waterwood Creek was undergoing a widening process, resulting in travel delays for many locals. Inman Road is the site of a historic plaque commemorating the skirmish of Taper's Barn. On July 14, 1865, 20 Union soldiers foraging for food encountered at least 40 Confederate soldiers. The Confederates, unaware of the war's end, opened fire on the Union contingent. Although the exchange of fire was heavy, none of the soldiers were wounded, save a Confederate sniper who was injured upon falling from his position high in a pecan tree. An understanding was eventually reached between the opposing forces, and both sides went on their way.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

    I saw the Arab map.
It resembled a mare shuffling on,
    dragging its history like saddlebags,
nearing its tomb and the pitch of hell.
Adonis [Ali Ahmed Said] (b. 1930)

To a surprising extent the war-lords in shining armour, the apostles of the martial virtues, tend not to die fighting when the time comes. History is full of ignominious getaways by the great and famous.
    George Orwell (1903–1950)

I feel as tall as you.
Ellis Meredith, U.S. suffragist. As quoted in History of Woman Suffrage, vol. 4, ch. 14, by Susan B. Anthony and Ida Husted Harper (1902)
