Famous quotes containing the words injury, severity and/or score:

Every act of conscious learning requires the willingness to suffer an injury to one’s self-esteem. That is why young children, before they are aware of their own self-importance, learn so easily; and why older persons, especially if vain or important, cannot learn at all.
    Thomas Szasz (b. 1920)

When the severity of the law is to be softened, let pity, not bribes, be the motive.
    Miguel De Cervantes (1547–1616)

A man who is a politician at forty is a statesman at three score and ten. It is at this age, when he would be too old to be a clerk or a gardener or a police-court magistrate, that he is ripe to govern a country.
    W. Somerset Maugham (1874–1965)
