Ingrow (West) Railway Station - History

History

The station opened in 1867, along with the rest of the line, but was closed in 1961. After the station's closure, the existing station building was vandalised, and when it re-opened in 1968 was used as an unstaffed request stop. An appeal for donations raised enough money to buy the station building from Foulridge on the Skipton-Colne line, which closed in 1959 and had been built in a similar style to the other stations on the Worth Valley line. The building at Foulridge was demolished and rebuilt at Ingrow, opening in 1989.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

The thing that struck me forcefully was the feeling of great age about the place. Standing on that old parade ground, which is now a cricket field, I could feel the dead generations crowding me. Here was the oldest settlement of freedmen in the Western world, no doubt. Men who had thrown off the bands of slavery by their own courage and ingenuity. The courage and daring of the Maroons strike like a purple beam across the history of Jamaica.
    Zora Neale Hurston (1891–1960)

The history of our era is the nauseating and repulsive history of the crucifixion of the procreative body for the glorification of the spirit.
    —D.H. (David Herbert)

When we of the so-called better classes are scared as men were never scared in history at material ugliness and hardship; when we put off marriage until our house can be artistic, and quake at the thought of having a child without a bank-account and doomed to manual labor, it is time for thinking men to protest against so unmanly and irreligious a state of opinion.
    William James (1842–1910)
