The film is a theatrical feature-length version of an episode from the Japanese horror TV series Yonimo Kimyō na Monogatari (世にも奇妙な物語 lit. Tales of the Unusual). The episode, subtitled "Kyūkan" ("急患" lit. "Urgent Patient"), written by Ryoichi Kimizuka, was broadcast in 1991 in Japan.
