Index Point

Index Point (73°21′S 167°55′E / 73.350°S 167.917°E / -73.350; 167.917Coordinates: 73°21′S 167°55′E / 73.350°S 167.917°E / -73.350; 167.917) is a low, ice-covered point that forms the eastern extremity of the Mountaineer Range on the coast of Victoria Land, Antarctica. The feature lies at the terminus of Mariner Glacier, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) west of Emerging Island. It was so named in 1966 by the New Zealand Antarctic Place-Names Committee because the shape is suggestive of an index finger.

Famous quotes containing the words index and/or point:

Exile as a mode of genius no longer exists; in place of Joyce we have the fragments of work appearing in Index on Censorship.
    Nadine Gordimer (b. 1923)

Mildred Pierce: You look down on me because I work for a living, don’t you? You always have. All right, I work. I cook food and sell it and make a profit on it, which, I might point out, you’re not too proud to share with me.
Monte Beragon: Yes, I take money from you, Mildred. But not enough to make me like kitchens or cooks. They smell of grease.
Mildred Pierce: I don’t notice you shrinking away from a fifty- dollar bill because it smells of grease.
    Ranald MacDougall (1915–1973)
