Impedance Bridging - Clarification of Terms

Clarification of Terms

Although this article uses the term "impedance", it strictly only applies to "resistance".

For example, given a load impedance of R+jX, and the source has a fixed resistance while the source reactance is sweeped for all values, we find that the load resistance has maximum power when the source reactance is -X.

Given the same load impedance of R+jX, this time with a fixed source reactance while the source resistance is sweeped for all values, we find that the load resistance has maximum power when the source resistance is 0.

So, maximum power is delivered to the load resistance when the load and source reactances are conjugates and the source resistance is 0.

Famous quotes containing the words clarification of and/or terms:

One of the main tasks of adolescence is to achieve an identity—not necessarily a knowledge of who we are, but a clarification of the range of what we might become, a set of self-references by which we can make sense of our responses, and justify our decisions and goals.
    Terri Apter (20th century)

A radical is one of whom people say “He goes too far.” A conservative, on the other hand, is one who “doesn’t go far enough.” Then there is the reactionary, “one who doesn’t go at all.” All these terms are more or less objectionable, wherefore we have coined the term “progressive.” I should say that a progressive is one who insists upon recognizing new facts as they present themselves—one who adjusts legislation to these new facts.
    Woodrow Wilson (1856–1924)
