Immigration Equality (organization)

Immigration Equality, founded in 1994 as the Lesbian and Gay Immigration Rights Task Force, is a United States advocacy organization working for equal rights for LGBT and HIV-positive individuals with respect to policies maintained by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (formerly the Immigration and Naturalization Service). It is headquartered in New York and has chapters in thirteen other U.S. cities.

Immigration Equality is the only national LGBT immigration organization in the United States. According to Andrew Sullivan, it does "the lion's share of work in advocating for equal treatment for gay spouses and HIV-positive immigrants."

Famous quotes containing the words immigration and/or equality:

The admission of Oriental immigrants who cannot be amalgamated with our people has been made the subject either of prohibitory clauses in our treaties and statutes or of strict administrative regulations secured by diplomatic negotiations. I sincerely hope that we may continue to minimize the evils likely to arise from such immigration without unnecessary friction and by mutual concessions between self-respecting governments.
    William Howard Taft (1857–1930)

When a bachelor of philosophy from the Antilles refuses to apply for certification as a teacher on the grounds of his color I say that philosophy has never saved anyone. When someone else strives and strains to prove to me that black men are as intelligent as white men I say that intelligence has never saved anyone: and that is true, for, if philosophy and intelligence are invoked to proclaim the equality of men, they have also been employed to justify the extermination of men.
    Frantz Fanon (1925–1961)
