Talvi lives in Washington and runs the Talvi Violin Studio along with his wife Marjorie Kransberg-Talvi, a former concertmaster for the Pacific Northwest Ballet. His daughter Silva J.A. Talvi is a freelance journalist and Senior Editor for In These Times magazine.
