Famous quotes containing the word death:

“It was not death he feared—it was the disgrace of death, and the misery of the ignominious preparations. He knew in his heart that heaven could not call it murder that he had done; but he felt equally sure that man would do so.”
    —Anthony Trollope (1815–1882)

“Perhaps it is nothingness which is real and our dream which is non-existent, but then we feel think that these musical phrases, and the notions related to the dream, are nothing too. We will die, but our hostages are the divine captives who will follow our chance. And death with them is somewhat less bitter, less inglorious, perhaps less probable.”
    —Marcel Proust (1871–1922)

“Yet the wound, O see the wound
    This petrified heart has taken,
    Because, created deathless,
    Nothing but death remained
    To scatter magnificence....”
    —Philip Larkin (1922–1986)
