Deep Thunder is a research project by IBM that aims to improve short-term local weather forecasting through the use of high-performance computing. It is part of IBM's Deep Computing initiative that also produced the Deep Blue chess computer.
Deep Thunder aims to provide local, high-resolution weather predictions customised to weather-sensitive business operations.. The project began as an outgrowth from a project designed to help provide accurate weather forecasts for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.. It is now headquartered at IBM's Thomas J. Famous quotes containing the words deep and/or thunder:
“Yet here at least an earnest sense
Of human right and weal is shown;
A hate of tyranny intense,
And hearty in its vehemence,
As if my brothers pain and sorrow were my own.
O Freedom! if to me belong
Nor mighty Miltons gift divine,
Nor Marvells wit and graceful song.
Still with a love as deep and strong
As theirs, I lay, like them, my best gifts on thy shrine!”
—John Greenleaf Whittier (18071892)
“Small, black, as flies hanging in heat, the Boys,
Until the distance throws them forth, their hum
Bulges to thunder held by calf and thigh.”
—Thom Gunn (b. 1929)
