Ian Binnie - Judgments

Judgments

Due to Binnie's background in business and corporate law, he has typically written many of the judgments in those areas of law. His style of judging in constitutional cases is said to lean towards giving deference to government. This can most clearly be seen in cases such as the recent Chaoulli v. Quebec (Attorney General) .

Binnie nonetheless felt that a majority of the court was too favourable to the Crown against the rights of accused in R v Sinclair, a 2010 case regarding an accused's right to counsel during police questioning.

Famous quotes containing the word judgments:

Judgments, value judgments concerning life, whether for or against it, can in the end never be true: their only value is as symptoms, they only come into consideration as symptoms—in themselves such judgments are stupidities. We must reach out and attempt to put our finger on this astonishing finesse, that the value of life cannot be assessed.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)

To make our idea of morality centre on forbidden acts is to defile the imagination and to introduce into our judgments of our fellow-men a secret element of gusto.
    Robert Louis Stevenson (1850–1894)

The judgments our enemies make about us come nearer to the truth than those we make about ourselves.
François, Duc De La Rochefoucauld (1613–1680)
