Hypnotize (System of A Down Song) - Subject Matter

Subject Matter

The song's lyrics in the verses refer to the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 and propaganda's harmful effects upon its target audiences. The chorus is unrelated to the rest of the song. In an MTV interview Daron stated that he wrote the song while he was actually sitting in his car waiting for his girlfriend. From the point of view of a listener, however, this may well be another reference to the "simple-minded". Another meaning that can be taken from the chorus is that while reality-distorting political propaganda is rampant, everyday life continues as usual.

Famous quotes related to subject matter:

Morality for the novelist is expressed not so much in the choice of subject matter as in the plot of the narrative, which is perhaps why in our morally bewildered time novelists have often been timid about plot.
