Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis - Treatment

Treatment

  • Glucose or other carbohydrates can be given during an attack and may reduce the severity.
  • Intravenous calcium decreases activity of sodium channels. It may stop sudden attacks.
  • Diuretics such as furosemide may be needed to stop sudden attacks. acetazolamide and thiazide diuretics such as chlorothiazide are also effective.
  • Intravenous glucose and insulin stimulates potassium uptake into the cell by the Na-K ATPase and may reduce weakness without a loss of total body potassium.
  • A high-carbohydrate diet may be recommended.
  • Avoidance of other known attack triggers.

Famous quotes containing the word treatment:

Our treatment of both older people and children reflects the value we place on independence and autonomy. We do our best to make our children independent from birth. We leave them all alone in rooms with the lights out and tell them, “Go to sleep by yourselves.” And the old people we respect most are the ones who will fight for their independence, who would sooner starve to death than ask for help.
    Margaret Mead (1901–1978)

A regular council was held with the Indians, who had come in on their ponies, and speeches were made on both sides through an interpreter, quite in the described mode,—the Indians, as usual, having the advantage in point of truth and earnestness, and therefore of eloquence. The most prominent chief was named Little Crow. They were quite dissatisfied with the white man’s treatment of them, and probably have reason to be so.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The motion picture made in Hollywood, if it is to create art at all, must do so within such strangling limitations of subject and treatment that it is a blind wonder it ever achieves any distinction beyond the purely mechanical slickness of a glass and chromium bathroom.
    Raymond Chandler (1888–1959)
