Hwacheon County - Culture

Culture

As Gangwon Province is South Korea's coldest region, Hwacheon is home to an ice fishing festival in which thousands of competitors try to catch as many sancheoneo (Hangul: 산천어, wild trout) as possible. This takes place in the Hwacheoncheon (stream) during nearly the entire month of January. The festival organizers claim there are roughly 1,000,000 visitors annually.

Other annual events in Hwacheon include the jjokbae (Hangul: 쪽배, water raft) Festival in late July, the Tomato Festival in mid-August, and the Dragon Festival. It will be hosting the 16th World Winter Cities Conference for Mayors in 2014.

Famous quotes containing the word culture:

To be a Negro is to participate in a culture of poverty and fear that goes far deeper than any law for or against discrimination.... After the racist statutes are all struck down, after legal equality has been achieved in the schools and in the courts, there remains the profound institutionalized and abiding wrong that white America has worked on the Negro for so long.
    Michael Harrington (1928–1989)

The highest end of government is the culture of men.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

The purpose of education is to keep a culture from being drowned in senseless repetitions, each of which claims to offer a new insight.
    Harold Rosenberg (1906–1978)
