Famous quotes containing the words humboldt, state and/or university:

Whatever does not spring from a man’s free choice, or is only the result of instruction and guidance, does not enter into his very being, but still remains alien to his true nature; he does not perform it with truly human energies, but merely with mechanical exactness.
    —Karl Wilhelm Von Humboldt (1767–1835)

We are living in a demented world. And we know it. It would not come as a surprise to anyone if tomorrow the madness gave way to a frenzy which would leave our poor Europe in a state of distracted stupor, with engines still turning and flags streaming in the breeze, but with the spirit gone.
    Johan Huizinga (1872–1945)

The most important function of the university in an age of reason is to protect reason from itself.
    Allan Bloom (1930–1992)
