Famous quotes containing the words freedom of, freedom and/or press:

    Humans need justice in the here and now and grace in the thereafter. Justice in the here and now is possible only without freedom, and grace in the thereafter only through the freedom of God.
    Friedrich Dürrenmatt (1921–1990)

    ... the sentimentalist ... exclaims: “Would you have a woman step down from her pedestal in order to enter practical life?” Yes! A thousand times, yes! If we can really find, after a careful search, any women mounted upon pedestals, we should willingly ask them to step down in order that they may meet and help to uplift their sisters. Freedom and justice for all are infinitely more to be desired than pedestals for a few.
    Bertha Honore Potter Palmer (1849–1918)

    I press not to the quire, nor dare I greet
    The holy place with my unhallowed feet;
    My unwashed Muse pollutes not things divine,
    Nor mingles her profaner notes with thine;
    Here humbly at the porch she listening stays,
    And with glad ears sucks in thy sacred lays.
    Thomas Carew (1589–1639)
