Histology

The gastrointestinal tract has a form of general histology with some differences that reflect the specialization in functional anatomy. The GI tract can be divided into four concentric layers:

  • Mucosa
  • Submucosa
  • Muscularis externa (the external muscular layer)
  • Adventitia or serosa
