Hugh Lofting - Victory For The Slain

Victory for the Slain (1942) is Lofting's only work for adults, a single long poem in seven parts about the futility of war; the refrain "In war the only victors are the slain" permeates the poem. It was published only in the United Kingdom.

Famous quotes containing the words victory and/or slain:

For by superior energies; more strict
Affiance in each other; faith more firm
In their unhallowed principles, the bad
Have fairly earned a victory o’er the weak,
    The vacillating, inconsistent good.
    William Wordsworth (1770–1850)

For the soul of Philip Sparrow
That was late slain at Carrow,
    Among the Nunnes Black.
