Private Life
Crackanthorpe's name was originally Cookson: he was born to Montague Hughes Cookson, later Crackanthorpe (1832–1913), and his wife, Blanche Althea Elizabeth, née Holt (d. 1928). In 1888 he changed his surname along with his father, in order to inherit a legacy.
In 1893 he married Leila Macdonald, another writer. The couple relocated to France, where they shared a literary life. They travelled together from France to Italy, reaching the Amalfi Coast (Salerno) but the journey ended with a litigation. Leila was financially prosperous and soon came into a large inheritance. However, the temperamental Crackanthorpes were ill-suited for the institution of marriage, and they separated in 1896.

Famous quotes related to private life:
“The others acted a role; I was the role. She who was Mary Garden died that it might live. That was my genius ... and my sacrifice. It drained off so much of me that by comparison my private life was empty. I could not give myself completely twice.”
—Mary Garden (18741967)
