Staunton was eliminated in the semi-final (-4=0+1) by Adolf Anderssen, who won the tournament. Staunton was then beaten by Elijah Williams in the play-off for third place.
1858 Birmingham --- --- A knockout tournament in which the contestants played three-game mini-matches in each round. Staunton was eliminated in the second round (-2=0+0) by the eventual runner-up, Johann Jacob Löwenthal.
