Howard Lew Lewis - Other Television Comedy

Other Television Comedy

Lewis has notably appeared in two other prominent historical comedy series - as Blag in the Channel 4 sitcom Chelmsford 123 (1988) set during the Roman occupation of Britain in AD 123, and as assorted medieval peasants, (including Piers and Mr Applebottom) in The Black Adder (1983), set in 1485. His longest recurring role has been as dim barman Elmo Putney in the comedy series Brush Strokes (1991), and he has had minor parts in two Ronnie Barker sitcoms - The Magnificent Evans (1984) and Open All Hours (1985) - and the ITV comedy-drama Minder (1984). In 2004, he featured in the BBC pilot sitcom, Elmo Putney: PI. This Brush Strokes spin off recast accident-prone and dimwitted Putney in the unfamiliar role of private investigator. The pilot was not successful and the series was not commissioned.

Famous quotes containing the words television and/or comedy:

What is a television apparatus to man, who has only to shut his eyes to see the most inaccessible regions of the seen and the never seen, who has only to imagine in order to pierce through walls and cause all the planetary Baghdads of his dreams to rise from the dust.
    Salvador Dali (1904–1989)

It is comedy which typifies, where it is tragedy which individualizes; where tragedy observes the nice distinctions between man and man, comedy stresses those broad resemblances which make it difficult to tell people apart.
    Harry Levin (b. 1912)
