Howard Brothers Discount Stores

Howard Brothers Discount Stores (informally known as Howard Brothers and Howard's) was a chain of discount stores in the Southeastern United States. The chain was founded in 1959 by Alton Howard and W.L. "Jack" Howard. In 1986, the now 87-store chain was later purchased by Wickes. It had stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. The HBD management attempted a buyout in 1986, but was unsuccessful. Later years, it fell on hard times due to the rise of Wal-Mart, and dissolved circa 1986.

Famous quotes containing the words howard, brothers, discount and/or stores:

    I wish to reiterate all the reasons which [my predecessor] has presented in favor of the policy of maintaining a strong navy as the best conservator of our peace with other nations and the best means of securing respect for the assertion of our rights of the defense of our interests, and the exercise of our influence in international matters.
    —William Howard Taft (1857–1930)

    Come, dear children, let us away;
    Down and away below!
    Now my brothers call from the bay,
    Now the great winds shoreward blow,
    Now the salt tides seaward flow;
    Now the wild white horses play,
    Champ and chafe and toss in the spray.
    Matthew Arnold (1822–1888)

    Don’t discount our powers;
    We have made a pass
    At the infinite,
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)
