Horace Liveright - Life and Career

Life and Career

Liveright was born into a Jewish family in 1884. He initially followed the career of a bond salesman. He married Lucille Elsas, the daughter of the owner of International Paper, in April 1911, and used his father-in-law's financial backing to embark on a publishing career.

The Liverights had two children, Herman and Lucy. Lucille divorced Liveright on grounds of misconduct in 1928, alleging "misconduct with an actress in an inn near Croton-on-Hudson."

He married the actress Elise Bartlett (who had appeared in Show Boat (1929 film), and had divorced actor Joseph Schildkraut in 1930) in December 1931; she filed for divorce four months later.

Famous quotes containing the words life and, life and/or career:

The contention that a standing army and navy is the best security of peace is about as logical as the claim that the most peaceful citizen is he who goes about heavily armed. The experience of every-day life fully proves that the armed individual is invariably anxious to try his strength. The same is historically true of governments. Really peaceful countries do not waste life and energy in war preparations, with the result that peace is maintained.
    Emma Goldman (1869–1940)

    Wherever art appears, life disappears.
    Francis Picabia (1878–1953)

I began my editorial career with the presidency of Mr. Adams, and my principal object was to render his administration all the assistance in my power. I flattered myself with the hope of accompanying him through [his] voyage, and of partaking in a trifling degree, of the glory of the enterprise; but he suddenly tacked about, and I could follow him no longer. I therefore waited for the first opportunity to haul down my sails.
    William Cobbett (1762–1835)
