Identical Uses of The Gesture

In some European cultures, the identical corna gesture is used to suggest spousal infidelity or Satanic association. Images of Jenna Bush publicly "throwing the horns" resulted in startled reactions in Norway. In 1985, five Americans were arrested, due to its satanic connotations after dancing and displaying the gesture in front of the Vatican while celebrating the victory of the Longhorns.

The sign is also heavily used as a symbol for Heavy Metal music and sub-culture. And Columbus, Georgia police told WXTX-TV in May 2010 the symbol is used by members of the Uptown criminal gang.

Famous quotes containing the words identical and/or gesture:

So universal and widely related is any transcendent moral greatness, and so nearly identical with greatness everywhere and in every age,—as a pyramid contracts the nearer you approach its apex,—that, when I look over my commonplace-book of poetry, I find that the best of it is oftenest applicable, in part or wholly, to the case of Captain Brown.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The simplest surrealist gesture consists in going out into the street, gun in hand, and taking pot shots at the crowd!
—Surrealist slogan from the 1920s, quoted by Luis Buñuel in My Last Sigh, ch. 10 (1983)
