Homunculus (manga) - Plot

Plot

Manabu Ito, a rich 22 year old medical student, tows 34 year old Susumu Nakoshi's car in order to convince him to undergo trepanation. Nakoshi is an actuary on an extended vacation who decided to take time off and live inside his car between a park where the homeless reside and a tall affluent hotel he used to frequent. He later hands in his letter of resignation from being an actuary at a life insurance company. Susumu is a misanthrope who does not believe in the supernatural, just the physical reality in front of him. Manabu is a medical student who is interested in human behavior, from the psychological, medical, to even the occult. As Susumu's sixth sense begins to be activated by the trepanation, he begins to confront his own past while at the same time becoming entangled in the lives of others. The plot also leans towards the occult by openly hinting to the "all seeing eye", in that Manabu stitches up one of Susumu's eyes in order to let him "see" the inward appearance of people, their Homunculus. This is a direct reference to the all seeing eye common among occult cultures.

Famous quotes containing the word plot:

    We have defined a story as a narrative of events arranged in their time-sequence. A plot is also a narrative of events, the emphasis falling on causality. “The king died and then the queen died” is a story. “The king died, and then the queen died of grief” is a plot. The time sequence is preserved, but the sense of causality overshadows it.
    —E.M. (Edward Morgan)

    There saw I how the secret felon wrought,
    And treason labouring in the traitor’s thought,
    And midwife Time the ripened plot to murder brought.
    Geoffrey Chaucer (1340?–1400)

    Ends in themselves, my letters plot no change;
    They carry nothing dutiable; they won’t
    Aspire, astound, establish or estrange.
    Philip Larkin (1922–1986)
