Holmes Colbert - Marriage and Children

Marriage and Children

Colbert married Betsy Love, who was also of mixed race. They were both well educated, having been sent to schools out of state. Famous quotes containing the words marriage and/or children:

In almost every marriage there is a selfish and an unselfish partner. A pattern is set up and soon becomes inflexible, of one person always making the demands and one person always giving way.
    Iris Murdoch (b. 1919)

It was common practice for me to take my children with me whenever I went shopping, out for a walk in a white neighborhood, or just felt like going about in a white world. The reason was simple enough: if a black man is alone or with other black men, he is a threat to whites. But if he is with children, then he is harmless, adorable.
    Gerald Early (20th century)
